In October of this year a dear friend of mine lost her father to kidney failure. The year before she lost her mother after a long battle with mental illness.

My friend is only 36 years old and she felt like she was now orphaned. She also doesn’t have a large family. It’s really only her and her husband and her brother and his wife and 2 kids. That’s a small family of 5.

I really felt compelled to honor their memory with a gift. She received jewelry when her mom died, but I wasn’t sure if that’s what my heart was saying. So a friend and I came up with the idea for me to paint her something and the concept of a compass really seemed to fit perfectly. This is the piece I painted for her.

A memento of the past, but a reminder to still look forward knowing she is guided. And to not fear not knowing where she is going without their guidance.
